Due to its proximity to the main square (Piazza Maggiore), Via D'Azeglio is the posh and trendy area of the city: it is the most "exclusive area" of Bologna, a passageway with refined shops.
The ancient name of the street, from Porta San Mamolo to Luigi Farini, was San Mamolo, while the remaining part of the road towards Piazza Maggiore was referred to as "Via dicta Platea Major". The city council of 1866 proposed that the street be named after Massimo Taparelli, marquis d'Azeglio, writer, painter, statesman and son-in-law of Alessandro Manzoni.
