The library was founded as part of the Consorzio Provinciale Pubblica Lettura of Bologna in the late 1970s and in 1984 it was named after Mayor Lazzari. In August 2003 it was moved to the new headquarters within the Cherry Tree Park and dedicated - in the presence of representatives of the Twin Municipality of Molde (Norway) - to the Norwegian playwright Bjørnson, who stayed in the territory of Monterenzio between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
