The Labante caves are considered the most significant example of travertine caves in Italy, and perhaps in all of Europe. They are classified as a European Site of Community Importance (SCI). They were formed by a karstic phenomenon that causes the formation of a particular travertine called "Sponga". A high waterfall adorns the largest cavern, among moss and lush vegetation, flowing into a small, clear pond. Spectacular stalactites hang in the smaller cavern, called Grotta dei Tedeschi. There is a third, smaller cave which is not open to the public. The Etruscans used the travertine of these caves to construct the ancient town of Kainua and more recently times it was used in the construction of the Brasa shrine
