As of 1 July 2024 Palazzo Pepoli Campogrande is closed to the public for renovation and function-related upgrading. It is scheduled to reopen in spring of 2026.
The Quadreria is located in the Palazzo Pepoli Nuovo or Campogrande, in the most prestigious senatorial district of Bologna. The Building, built in the 17th century opposite the Medieval Palazzo Pepoli Vecchio, is home, other than to the detached section of the National Art Gallery, to the Archive and to the Territorial Photographic Service. The entire decorative structure of Palazzo Pepoli Nuovo is aimed at the triumph of the Pepoli family, which was realised thanks to the work of the great Bolognese artists in decoration of the second half of the 17th century, including Giuseppe Maria Crespi and Donato Creti. The picture gallery is displayed in the rooms on the main floor. This is the ancient collection of paintings that the Zambeccari, an important Bolognese senatorial family, had collected during the 18th century in their palace near San Paolo. Having become part of the National Art Gallery's heritage in 1884, the picture gallery is the only aristocratic collection of the '600 and '700 that has survived to this day.
It offers fundamental works of the main protagonists of Emilian painting: Ludovico Carracci, the Guercino, Francesco Albani, Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Donato Creti.
