The structure was built in 1907 as the People's House (Casa del Popolo) by one of the first cooperative organisations of socialist inspiration. The theatre, located on the first floor, consists of a rectangular hall with a balcony and slender wooden columns running along three sides.
Inaugurated on 22 September 1907 in the presence of the socialist deputies Ferri and Bentini, it was used both in the years leading up to the First World War and thereafter as a venue for shows and political and trade union meetings. Following the rise of Fascism, it first became the Casa del Fascio and, after the war, was restored to its original function as the local Casa del Popolo.
It was renovated in 1981 by the Municipality, when a plaque was placed at the entrance of the hall in memory of the tenor Francesco Grassilli, father of the actor Raoul, a native of Castello d'Argile. Reinaugurated on 25 April 2004, the theatre can also serve as an exhibition venue.
