Monte Bastione is home to the most enchanting stretch of the Flaminia Militare, the ancient trail along which the famous Via degli Dei unfolds connecting Bologna to Florence and passing through the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.

The remains of the Roman paved road which attracts thousands of hikers, travellers and mountain bikers every year can be admired between San Benedetto Val di Sambro (Bologna) and Passo della Futa (Florence) 1,190 metres asl. Venturing into the woods at Pian di Balestra, you reach a quarry that was probably used in Roman times to extract the material to build the road.

The charming paved road is located nearby: eleven kilometres of paving blocks, some of which perfectly preserved, lead visitors through a unique journey between nature and history. Cesare Agostini and Franco Santi excavated the side of Monte Bastione between 1977 and 1979 and discovered the first stretch of paved road on 25th August 1979.
