Your experience in brief
In October 1944, the 6th South African Armoured Division faced one of the toughest challenges of the Italian Campaign on the ridge of Monte Salvaro. For five days, between 19 and 24 October, South African units advanced along the ridge in heavy rain, attacking the fortified positions of the German army. After fierce hand-to-hand combat, the South Africans captured the summit, but at a very high price in terms of casualties. The conquest of the mountain marked the point of maximum Allied penetration in the sector before the winter break.
We will walk along the path taken by the South African soldiers to reach the summit of Monte Salvaro, listening to the testimonies of those who fought in that fierce battle.
The Proloco di Grizzana Morandi is pleased to welcome the group to the Cross of Monte Salvaro to offer everyone a sweet, small refreshment!
