Your experience in brief
2:00 p.m. – Entrance to the Certosa di Bologna
An evocative journey to discover the silent and contemplative art of Bartolomeo Cesi, one of the leading figures in Bolognese painting between the 16th and 17th centuries.
The tour begins with the entrance to the Church of San Girolamo, where in 1593 Prior Giovanni Battista Capponi commissioned Cesi to decorate the entire main chapel with a mixture of frescoes, paintings and stuccoes. The undisputed protagonists of this “sacred theatre” are the three imposing canvases depicting the stories of the Passion of Christ (Orazione nell'orto, Crocifissione con i dolenti, Deposizione), masterpieces by the artist.
Ludovico Carracci also painted two canvases for this church, which are on display in the exhibition at the Medieval Civic Museum entitled “Bartolomeo Cesi (1556-1629). Painting of silence in the age of the Carracci”.
The experience continues with a walk through some of the rooms of the ancient Carthusian monastery, discovering other works by the painter preserved in the Sala Weber and the Chiostro delle Madonne, two places of great charm that recount the dialogue between art and spirituality in late Renaissance Bologna.
