The 102nd edition of the Giro d’Italia chose Bologna as the city to host the start. The race is scheduled to get under way on 11 May, but the Giro’s parade, the “carovana”, will start injecting party spirit into the city of the Two Towers a few days earlier, with events, encounters, setting up of the start village and presentation of the teams and racers, who will be battling it out along the boot of Italy in a bid to take home the pink jersey. On Thursday 9 May Piazza Maggiore will host the show of the teams presentation. Access to the square will be free from 8pm (until the square fills up). The show begins at 9:30pm The 2019 Giro d’Italia will officially start on Saturday 11 May with the first stage, which will take place entirely in Bologna, consisting of an individual time trial over a mere 8km. The race will take place against the backdrop of two of the city's symbolic sites: starting in the central Via Rizzoli, near the majestic Piazza Maggiore and finishing at the top of the Colle della Guardia hill, where the Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca stands. The route may be short, but it is spectacular: the final 2km are entirely uphill all the way to the Sanctuary, with the slope’s gradients peaking at 16%. Hundreds of fans will be there waiting under the beautiful portico lining the climb, ready to cheer on their favourites around the hairpin bends and up to the finish line. On Sunday 12 May, the Giro d’Italia will get back on the road from Bologna, this time heading for Tuscany, calling at Sasso Marconi, Vado and passing over the top of the hill at Castiglione dei Pepoli.
