"There was never a man who sought so much"
700 Years After the Death of Marco Polo
Il Milione tells of a journey of knowledge rather than conquest: Marco
Polo did not go to Asia in search of wealth, power, and honor but to discover a
new form of civilization. "There was never a man who sought so
much" takes inspiration from this conviction, creating a
concert-reading of music, images, and words that follows the many routes of
Marco Polo’s travels through the Far East, including his passage through
Persian lands. Excerpts from Il Milione in Franco-Venetian, selected and
read by Sandro Cappelletto, are interwoven with musical improvisations by two
masters of Persian music: Kayhan Kalhor, the legendary kamancheh player
(Iranian bowed string instrument), and Kiya Tabassian, a setar (Persian lute)
player. The wonders of the ancient illuminated manuscript Bodleian are
brought to life through video projections curated by Delumen.
ARTISTS:
- Kayhan Kalhor - kamancheh
- Kiya Tabassian - setar
