Cécile McLorin Salvant is one of the spearheads of the new generation of heroines of jazz singing deeply anchored in the African-American matrix. In her personal vision of African-American music, jazz, vaudeville, blues and folk are closely interconnected. The themes addressed in the songs, often dug up from forgotten repertoires, are ‘strong’ and allow her voice to display all its interpretative intensity, supported by a wide register whose perfect control reveals her classical operatic training.
