On Sunday 20 September 2026, Villa Smeraldi - Museum of Rural Life in San Marino di Bentivoglio (Bologna) hosts the Hemp Festival: a day at the museum featuring historical re-enactments, workshops and guided tours exploring traditional methods of growing and processing hemp, one of the key crops of the Bolognese agricultural system from the early modern period until the 1950s.
At 3:30 pm, Andar per maceri, a bike ride to discover the traditional hemp-retting ponds of the local area, with biologist Valeria Marchesini providing insights into their botanical features.
Estimated round-trip duration: 3 hours. Bikes can be rented from "Anima Bike" - Coop sociale Anima (for a fee), or participants can use their own bicycles.
