The San Luca Fair in Bologna is one of the city’s most cherished spring events, closely linked to the traditional descent of the Icon of the Madonna di San Luca from the sanctuary in the hills down to the historic centre. An event that blends spirituality, popular culture and a festive atmosphere, drawing in locals and visitors alike every year.
To mark the arrival of the sacred image in the city – scheduled to begin on 9 May 2026 – Via Altabella and the surrounding streets come alive with a vibrant street fair full of colour, scent and tradition. The stalls offer a wide selection of products: from traditional sweets to household goods, as well as crafts, accessories and ornamental plants, providing an authentic experience in the heart of Bologna.
The San Luca Fair is a defining moment for the city: it stems from an ancient devotional practice, documented as far back as the 15th century, when the descent of the Madonna was invoked to protect Bologna from calamities. Today, this tradition lives on, evolving into an event that brings together faith, community and tourism.
The procession and the areas involved:
The Madonna di San Luca arrives at Porta Saragozza at around 6 pm, from where the procession will wind its way along Via Saragozza, Collegio di Spagna, Carbonesi, d’Azeglio and Indipendenza. The arrival at San Pietro Cathedral is scheduled for 7 pm, followed by Holy Mass presided over by Monsignor Roberto Parisini, Vicar General for Administration.

Not to be confused with San Lócca Day in October or the Santa Lucia Christmas Fair, the May Fair retains its own distinct identity, more closely linked to the religious calendar and the spring season, making it one of the most distinctive experiences for those looking for things to do in Bologna in the spring.
