Utagawa Yoshiiku (1833-1904) is one of the most interesting ukiyo-artists of the historical period between the end of the Edo period (1603-1868), characterized by the closure of Japan to the rest of the world and the military dictatorship of the Tokugawa clan, and the first decades of the Meiji era (1868-1912), which followed the opening of the State in 1853, after more than two hundred years of isolation. Those were years of great changes, of rapid modernization and of massive westernization. Yoshiiku was born in Edo (now Tokyo) in 1833, and at the age of 16 he became a pupil of the great artist ukiyo-e Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861); from 1854 he began his production, preferring satirical, comical or violent themes and showing a sensible imagination and a remarkable care for the composition of his prints.
