On Saturday 27 May, the Gran Ballo dell'Unità d'Italia (Grand Ball of the Unification of Italy) is renewed for its 27th edition.
Piazza Carducci becomes the imaginary stage of the Ball Party that took place at the Teatro Comunale on 2 May 1860 on the occasion of King Victor Emmanuel II's visit to Bologna.
One hundred dancers from the 8cento APS will stage waltzes, polkas and quadrilles in historical costumes, evoking the festive atmosphere reported by Enrico Bottrigari in his chronicle, which has become the title of the re-enactment the enchanting spectacle... that touched the souls of the Bolognese.
To celebrate Bologna's centrality in the national scene, the Uniche Danze Italiane (Italian Dances) written and composed by Bolognese Maestro Luigi Giovetti for the unification of Italy will be presented, each of the six dances being dedicated to a city: Naples, Turin, Florence, Rome, Milan and Venice.
