Via degli Dei (Path of Gods)

Updated on 27 February 2020 From Bologna Welcome

The Via degli Dei (Path of Gods) is a hiking trail that connects the cities of Bologna and Florence across the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, named after some of the locations crossed during the journey, such as Monte Adone, Monzuno (Mons Iovis, Mount Jupiter), Monte Venere (Mount Venus) and Monte Luaro (Lua being the name of the Roman goddess of atonement). While hiking along this ancient path, dating back to the Etruscan period, you will experience the excitement of a true time travel!

The first leg of today’s CAI trail starts in Bologna, then follows the arcades of San Luca, goes all the way down to Casalecchio and ends in Sasso Marconi with the stunning Ponte di Vizzano after skirting the river. The second and the third legs run between Brento and Monte Adone, the highest mountain range of the Contrafforte Pliocenico Natural Reserve, and then move towards Monzuno and Madonna dei Fornelli, the starting point of the Via Flaminia Militare, a Roman trail since 187 B.C. After coming to Pian di Balestra on Mount Bastione, the fourth leg leads to the Passo della Futa, in the Tuscan territory, and heads towards San Piero a Sieve. The last part of the itinerary leads to Fiesole and finally to Florence.

Nowadays the “Via degli Dei” has become one of the Apennines’ major tourist attractions, with plenty of history, culture, food and wine traditions, wonderful landscapes and immense natural parks to be encountered during your journey. Furthermore, thanks to its versatility, it can be enjoyed both by trekking lovers and by passionate mountain bikers, who are free to shape their own paths. The whole trip from Bologna to Florence is not particularly hard and can be undertaken in four/six days walking, or in two/three days by bike.
