Bologna
The P420 gallery is delighted to present the exhibition Sentimento illumina featuring previously unseen paintings by Alessandro Pessoli (Cervia, 1963 - lives and works in Los Angeles), specially created for the occasion, in dialogue with a selection he has made of works by Piero Manai (Bologna, 1951-1988).
Pessoli's style is colourful and at first sight cheerful. The artist imbues his canvases with a wealth of images, all linked by a strong emotional intensity. Going beyond the cheerfulness of the palette and style in which he mixes techniques and materials in a lively manner, his works hover between amusement, dreaminess and the grotesque.
Piero Manai's figures and heads are neither representations nor portraits: devoid of expression or psychology, almost in disintegration, they are perhaps more accurately self-portraits, and are not seen from the outside, but from within. His pictorial language does not seem reducible to any of the different artistic practices in force at the time, indeed, in its diversity, it seems to bring them all together, to such an extent that it is difficult to find a way, perhaps futile, of classifying it.
