Museums

There are more than fifty museums in Bologna that conserve rich heritage unique both for the quality of the master pieces and their thematic and time diversity. You are free to make your itinerary choosing from the most classic to the most curious and surprising museums.
You can admire the magnificent Etruscan situla (vessel) from Certosa, the majestic statue in marble of Bonifacio VIII, the picture by Raffaello Estasi di Santa Cecilia (St. Cecil Ecstasy), the Angel statue by Michelangelo, Madonna col bambino (Virgin Mary with child) by Giotto, Madonna col bambino e santi (Virgin Mary with child and saints) by Parmigianino, frescos by Caracci and Guido Reni, the house of Giorgio Morandi and his pictures.
And more surprising things... Historical collections of anatomy and obstetrics, anatomy wax models, military architecture inside of the Palazzo Poggi of the University of Bologna (founded in 1088). Manuscripts by young Mozart (who got his diploma in Bologna) and historical music instruments in the Museo Internazionale e Biblioteca della musica (International Museum and Library of Music). Numerous toy soldiers in paper, metal, wood, stucco or plastic; unique pieces or series in the Museo storico del Soldatino (Historical Museum of Toy soldiers) in the Villa Aldrovandi Mazzacorati. The memory of Bologna when it used to be an important port and the world leader in the silk production thanks to the innovative use of the hydraulic power from the 15th to the 18th centuries documented in the Museo del Patrimonio Industriale (Museum of Industrial Heritage). Vessels for the medical preparations from the Bologna's first hospital pharmacy in the Museo della Sanità (Heath Museum).  About six thousand pieces of textile from Italy and other parts of the world conserved in the Museo del Tessuto e della Tappezzeria “Vittorio Zironi” (Tapestry Museum).  A touching installation made by Christian Boltanski recomposing pieces of the aircraft Dc-9 shot down in 1980 and commemorating the tragedy.

Collezioni Comunali d'Arte

The Municipal Art Collections include 250 paintings that span the period from the middle ages to current day.  They are a faithful history of the city's lively and fertile art scene.  Then there are artistic objects, furniture, porcelains, fabrics, laces, embroidery, miniatures and artistically significant medieval wooden crucifixes from Bolognese area churches.

The Museo Morandi has been temporarily hosted at MAMbo since 2012?when its facilities in Palazzo d’Accursio were closed for restoration.? In the via Don Minzoni 14 location, at MAMbo, the Morandi exhibit has a reorganised layout of paintings, graphic works and books.

Museo Internazionale e Biblioteca della Musica

The International Museum and Library of Music opened in 2004. It is located in the historical centre of Bologna inside Palazzo Sanguinetti. The wonderfully painted salons house a collection of important historical documents: treaties, volumes, librettos, letters, manuscripts and original scores donated by Giambattista Martini.

Museo Civico d'Arte Industriale e Quadreria Davia Bargellini

While small, this collection is especially varied, including furniture, metals, glass works, ceramics, textiles, woodworking; it is a sort of anthology of applied and decorative art. The paintings on display belong largely to the Bargellini family, avid art collectors since the 1500s.

Palazzo Fava, Exhibition Centre, covering more than 2600 square metres, is regularly used as an exhibition centre. Its rooms house collections from the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Bologna as well as exhibitions of works from other important public and private collections.

This collection of ancient musical instruments was donated to the city by Maestro Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini, Bolognese organist and musicologist. The collection is unique for the prestige and sheer number of objects, including collections of folk and wind instruments from the 16th to 19th centuries; clavichords; organs; harpsichords, spinets and pianos.

The University of Bologna Botanical Gardens are one of the oldest in Italy. They were in fact founded in 1568 on the initiative of Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605). After being transferred several times, the gardens finally found their permanent home in Via Irnerio, a short distance away from Via Zamboni.

The University of Bologna Herbarium is one of the oldest in Europe. It contains dried plant collections that date from the 16th century onwards. Its historic collections are particularly important, especially the one created by Ulisse Aldrovandi in the 16th century.
