On Oct.1 2017 the city of Bologna will host the Holy Father Pope Francis. Here is the basic information on how to get to Bologna, how to move around, what to expect from the visit.
Getting to Bologna by train
Besides the ordinary trains, an additional set of routes will be available on October 1st to to manage the inflow and outflow of visitors. In particular, on the day of Oct.1st Trenitalia will add some extra 44 trains. To facilitate the connections to the Stadio zone for whoever arrives by train, a dedicated shuttle bus will be made available. Please find at the bottom of this page the timetables for both additional trains and dedicated shuttles.
Getting to Bologna by car
If you are getting to Bologna by car, we suggest that you leave the car in one of the following parking spaces and take the free Tper shuttle buses to the Stadio and the railway station.
Further parkings are available in Via Stalingrado. Those who come from Casalecchio can park in Unipol Arena parking spaces.
Shuttles and traffic- related measures
In order to offer as many people as possible the access to the locations that the Pope will visit, three free Tper shuttle buses will be available, connecting the Stadio and the Railway Station with 4 surburban parking spaces.
Expecting a mass of incoming pilgrims, for the occasion Bologna will introduce specific traffic measures to loosen up an inevitable traffic congestion that an event of this kind brings about.
With several roads and city zones closed off to traffic due to the pastoral visit, diverted bus routes will be available. Additionally, during the scheduled days, detailed information about changes to public transport will be posted at urban bus stops.
The Policlinico Sant’Orsola-Malpighi is situated in the center of the visit’s scheduled itinerary, therefore several alternative routes will be put in use from 1:00, Oct.1 2017 until late afternoon of the same day.
Coming/Leaving by BLQ aerobus

Tourist Information Office operations
On Oct. 1st, Bologna Welcome Office in Piazza Maggiore will be closed, however online ticket booking is still operative. In case of any request for information or leaflets, the office remains open until 19:00 on Sep. 30th.
The Pope’s pastoral visit will begin at 10:30 with his arrival in Via Mattei. From there the Pope will head for a visit to the regional migrant reception centre "Hub regionale" in via Mattei, for meeting with migrants and care workers.
At 11:30, His Holiness will transfer to Piazza Maggiore through Via Mattei, Via Massarenti, Via San Vitale, Via Rizzoli and Piazza Re Enzo. In Piazza Maggiore, he will deliver his recitation of the Angelus at 12:00.
Following the recitation are the Holy Father’s lunch with poor people in the Basilica "San Petronio", then a meeting with priests, religious, seminarians in the Cattedrale di San Pietro and an encounter with university staff and students in Piazza San Domenico.
At 16:00, the Pope will set off for the Stadio Dall’Ara by car through Via Marsili, Via Urbana, Via Saragozza, Via De Coubertin, Via Andrea Costa, Via dello Sport. At the end of the Celebration of Holy Mass which will commence at 17:00, it is his scheduled departure from Centro Sportivo “Corticelli” di Via Zoni.
