Sensual, unsettling, spectacular and moving - this musical, inspired by Manuel Puig’s novel and made famous also thanks to the film featuring Academy Award-winner William Hurt and Raoul Julia - “Kiss of the Spider Woman” - is considered by many a real masterpiece of the 1990s as well as one of the best works by duo Kander & Ebb. Luis Alberto Molina, a homosexual man convicted for having sex with an underage boy, shares a cell with Marxist revolutionary Valentin Arregui Paz. Despite their differences, the two come to trust each other and develop a bond which is so strong that it even leads one to sacrificing his life for the other. With a vibrant soundtrack by John Kander combining Latin sounds with the traditional and modern Broadway styles and enriched by the deepest and heartfelt opera compositions by Fred Ebb, “Kiss of the Spider Woman” is a testimony to the love, trust and friendship that can arise even in the most terrible circumstances.
