Istituzione Bologna Musei | Museo Civico Medievale 1143: la croce ritrovata di Santa Maria Maggiore curated by Massimo Medica 23 June 2017 – 7 January 2018 A precious road cross found in October 2013 during the pavement work of the portico of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore is exhibited for the first time at the Medieval Civic Museum. From June 23 to January 7, 2018, this cross can be seen, restored by Giovanni Giannelli (Ottorino Nonfarmale Restoration Laboratory), a work that is part of the type of crosses placed on columns, which were placed at the focal points of the city, in order to signal sacred spaces such as churches and cemeteries or of particular aggregation such as the trivial or the crossroads and the squares. The rediscovered cross of Santa Maria Maggiore is of great interest both because it was among the many specimens gone missing, and because it is possible to date it thanks to the inscription 1143, present in the right arm. The work is thus placed among the oldest models we have received, shortly after that of the Apostles and Evangelists, also called of Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, dating back to 1159. To better enhance and contextualize the newfound cross, the exhibition presents a selection of 14 other pieces including the casts of other roads crosses lost or no longer visible in the original locations, illuminated manuscripts of XI and XII century, ivory tablets and precious jewelery works, examples of widespread artistic culture in Bologna. The exhibition includes a rich catalog and the documentary Bologna città della croce made by Monsignor Andrea Caniato, visible on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBm58qgdR7Y GUIDED TOURS Guided tours to 1143: la croce ritrovata di Santa Maria Maggiore Saturday 9 September, 16 September and 30 September 2017 at 10,30am Sunday 1 October, 22 October, 5 November, 3 December 2017 and 7 January 2018 at 4pm.
