Discover one of the countless unique places in the city of Bologna! Did you know that the Valverde Cistern, erroneously called Bagni di Mario (Mario’s Baths), is actually a cistern dating back to the Renaissance period (1563) built to supply the Fountain of Neptune?
The cistern structure consists of a main room, a secondary room and some tunnels.
The guided tour takes place most of all in the main room, in which we find an octagonal cistern and eight small tanks for the water decanting system. Above the cistern, there is a wide dome with a central Oculus. During the visit, it will be possible to explore all the viable tunnels, one of which is characterised by an aeration chimney entirely covered in calcareous incrustations formed over the centuries.
In the secondary room, it will be possible to admire a second smaller cistern called the “Conservetta”.
