After being a swamp and a rice paddy, the Ex Risaia di Bentivoglio, also known as Oasi la Rizza, was declared aprotected natural area at the end of the 1990s. After centuries, even the magnificent white stork has gone back to repopulate the area.

The small poplar woods were integrated with new hedges and a large marshy area that characterises the entire area was dug. The oasis is a paradise for ornithologists and nature lovers and, with its over 34 hectares of biodiversity and a wealthy flora and fauna typical of large freshwater swamps, it is a unique place that offers visitors a perfect example of the swamp that used to dominate the Bologna plain.

It is possible to admire numerous species of local birds, such as grey herons, great egrets, storks, little egrets, mallards, hawks and many others that find refuge between the water rises and rushes making comfortable shelters for their nests. The oasis features footpaths and cycle paths as well as  lookouts to safeguard the tranquillity of the local ecosystem.
