1 April 2016
Aula Magna di Santa Lucia

A big music party will mark the celebrations for 900 years of the Municipality of Bologna  with many young musicians from this city and Europe as well. On Friday April 1, at the Aula Magna of Santa Lucia, from 6 p.m. till late in the evening, different musical ensembles will perform for free to celebrate the history of cities across Europe.

The programme will start with Bachs Streicherkinder, the string orchestra  from the “Johann Sebastian Bach” school in Leipzig, and the Orchestra dei Giovanissimi from the music Conservatory of Bologna (OgB). They will perform both separately and together. At 9 p.m. a chamber ensemble from the Orchestra Senzaspine will introduce the Mannheim wind Orchestra: Mannheimer Bläserphilharmonie.

The String Orchestra from the “Johann Sebastian Bach” school of Leipzig is made up of 44 musicians from 10 to 15 years old and conducted by Marie Smalla. The Orchestra is  reciprocating a visit by the Orchestra dei Giovanissimi performed in 2015 as part of the twinning between the two cities. For the event, the Bolognese Orchestra dei Giovanissimi from the Music Conservatory will compose about 100 musicians aged between 9 and 16, being conducted alternatevely by Aurelio Zarrelli, Riccardo Martinini, Lorenzo Bettini and Stefano Chiarotti.

In the second part of the concert the Senzaspine Orchestra Quartet, an under 35 ensemble founded in Bologna in 2013 and conducted either by Matteo Parmeggiani or Tommaso Ussardi, will precede the other international guest of the day, the Mannheimer Bläserphilharmonie from Mannheim, designated as an UNESCO Creative City of Music, the same status as Bologna. The German ensemble, made up of 70 musicians and cunducted by Miguel Ercolino, will pay special attention to contemporary music and has already recorded a dozen records and completed several international tours. The Mannheim Orchestra will offer a musical journey through the Americas, from Leonard Bernstein to Alberto Ginastera.
