Many great jazz musicians passed through Bologna. La strada del jazz, the project by Paolo Alberti & Gilberto Mora - at its 6th edition this year, makes this glorious tradition live again by remembering and paying honour to famous international jazz artists with "special stars" and with the music of contemporary jazz players invading manifold corners of the city.
Each year a marble star-shaped tile dedicated to a great jazz artist is placed in via Orefici and via Caprarie pavement, the first one paying a tribute to Chet Baker. For this 6th edition of La Strada del Jazz two new "stars" will celebrate other two famous protagonists of the jazz panorama: the pianist and composer Cedar Walton (Dallas, 17 January 1934 – New York, 19 August 2013) and the virtuoso tenor saxophone Dexter Gordon (Los Angeles, 27 February 1923 – Philadelphia, 25 April 1990). A third “star” will be placed in memory of Nardo Giardina of the Doctor Dixie Jazz Band.
La strada del jazz 2016will be at its height on Saturday 17th at 5.30 pm in Via Orefici, with the official opening of the event in the presence of the mayor of Bologna, the placing of the stars dedicated to Gordon, Walton, and Giardina, and the Strada del Jazz award given to the special guests of this year, Renzo Arbore and Luca Carboni.
As for previous editions, on Saturday the “Jazz night” will enliven the whole Quadrilatero area and Strada Maggiore, up to Piazzetta San Michele, from 6 pm to 11.30pm, with jazz performances and special opening of shops, while bars and restaurants will be proposing jazz-themed cocktails and menu.
