The Valverde Cistern, mistakenly called “Mario’s Baths”, is a cistern of renaissance period (1563) designed and built by the palermitan architect Tommaso Laureti. It was made for supplying water to the Fountain of Neptune.
The cistern’s structure consists of a main room, a secondary room and some tunnels. The guided tour takes place most of all in the main room, in which there’s an octagonal cistern and eight small tanks for the water decanting system. Above the cistern, there’s a wide dome with a central Oculus.
During the visit, it will be possible to explore all the viable tunnels. In one of these tunnels, there’s a particularity: an aeration chimney completely covered by secular calcareous incrustations.
In the secondary room, it will be possible to appreciate a second smaller cistern, called the “Conservetta”.
