The trekking itinerary follows the 5 Bologna valleys and across the Pliocene mountain spur.
Arrival in Bologna and free time.
Independent transfer to Sasso Marconi and set off on the suggested track from Sasso Marconi to Pianoro, through Badolo and its church and the old Madonna della Rocca, then on to Monte Adone and Brento, following a steep climb up the side of Monte del Frate. The long vertical wall of Monte del Frate, a beautiful sight from the bottom of the Setta, gives a beautiful view on the sandstone and the other layers the spur is made of; the vegetation is of particular interest, with intensely scented helychrisum, and the fauna. Indeed, it is not uncommon to see birds of prey – including peregrine falcons – hovering above the mountain. Expected itinerary time: 5 hours and 30 minutes.
Set off on the suggested track from Pianoro to Monterenzio, through Monte delle Formiche, an interesting outcrop in the Bologna Apennines located between the streams Idice and Zena, which owes its curious name to a phenomenon that has taken place every year since time immemorial: swarms of winged ants reach its summit to die. The event, taking place at the same time as the Feast of the Virgin, which over time has taken almost a miraculous value, as testified to by several Latin writings still preserved in the sanctuary at the mountain summit. Expected itinerary time: 6 hours. Departure.
