Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari used to host some important Italian motor racing events such as San Marino Gran Prix (Formula 1) and Formula 3000 World Championship, and at present still hosts other races such as Superbike and Endurance Championships.

The building serves many purposes. Apart from racing competitions, it also hosts important events like Mostra Scambio – the most important meeting related to cars, motorbikes, bikes, accessories and vintage car parts  - concerts and exhibitions.

The racetrack was built in 1950 but race lovers would have to wait until 1953 to see the first sport event, Coni Gran Prix, followed by Conchiglia D'oro Shell Gran Prix and the first Formula 1 race (untitled at the time). After being renovated, the racetrack hosted for the first time the Road Racing World Championship Gran Prix and three years later Checco Costa, the inventor of motobikes events, gave birth to the race known as "200 Miglia", inspired by Daytona 200. In 1979 the racetrack became a permanent circuit (some parts of the track were still used as ordinary roads) and on 14th September 1980 the 51th Italian Gran Prix took place: Formula 1 officially started in Imola. On 3rd May of the following year San Marino Gran Prix was created, an important event for car lovers until 2006 when the last race was held and renovation and modernization works started.

In the Autodromo many legendary pilots competed, such as Ayrton Senna. A statue was built in his memory in 1997 and now many car lovers still go and see it as an act of homage.
