Already part of the Roman Via Emilia, Strada Maggiore runs between arcaded medieval houses, palaces and churches, from Porta Ravegnana to Porta Maggiore. At the start of the street there is the church of S. Bartolomeo of the XVIIth century, which in the interior, with three naves, contains paintings by Francesco Albani and Guido Reni. On the right hand side of the street one of the most beautiful and well kept churches in Bologna, the Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi. Considered one of the gratest masterpieces of Italian Gothicism, the building works on this Basilica started in 1345: over 108m long and 23m wide, the Basilica boasts three internal naves enriched with numerous works of art. The most distinguishable piece is the Madonna and child on a throne with angels by Cimabue.
