The Archiginnasio Palace, the first permanent seat of the ancient Studium or University of Bologna, was built in 1563. The University was transferred to Palazzo Poggi in 1803 and this complex was used by the City Library from 1838.
On the top floor the original ten scholastic classrooms are flanked by two large halls: for the “Artists” (those who studied the applied arts such as science), today reading room of the library, and one for the “Legisti” (the Law students), today called Stabat Mater Hall in memory of the first performance, held on March 18th, 1842 of the Stabat Mater by Gioacchino Rossini, under the direction of Gaetano Donizzetti.
This solemn environment is one of the most representative of the old University seat, because it is richly decorated by various inscriptions and commemorative monuments of the masters of the Studio together with the students’ coats of arms.
On the south wall, the monument of cardinal legato Fabrizio Savelli (1648) is characterised by a two-headed eagle, emblem of the Germanic homeland.
A large fresco depicting the Vergine col Bambino (Virgin with child), dated to 1569, is situated at the center of the western partition, towering above the former location of the teacher’s desk.
Today the Stabat Mater Hall welcomes cultural events, conferences, and exhibitions.
